I was invited to join my friends Paul Dehaan and June Thanasophon on a team in the
Pole Pedal Paddle, a multi-sport race in Bend, Oregon on May 19, 2007. The race is
described HERE , but it consists of downhill skiing/boarding, cross-
country skiing, biking, running, kayaking, and finishes with a sprint.

Our friend Allison Dehaan arranged for a SWEET house that 11 of us could stay in. The teams were
June, Paul D and I as team PJP, Carl Marshall and Bill Righter as the Defleaters, and Ross Segelken,
Allison Dehaan, Kelli Caldwell, and Larry Wickstrom as the Cool People. Chris Gorman, shown here,
was not on a team, but came for moral support, and to bang on this drum that he found at the house.

Full size
This was when Bill realized that he had forgotten his rental cross country ski boots. It was NOT
happy in Billy-town.

Full size
This is Larry Wickstrom and his girlfriend's dog. Check the ears on this thing! I'm sure it picks up VHF
just fine!

Full size
Me beating the drum. The shiner is still showing a little, but not as badly. Great couch here though.

Full size
Bill decided that he might luck out and be able to rent ski boots at Mt Bachelor so he went ahead
and waxed his skis. A little luck, and $10 later, he had more boots.

Full size
Carl Marshall and June Thanasophon had jsut returned from Hawaii that morning and so were a little
jet lagged. Of course, neither one of them ever shows that they're tired though.

Bill had a bit of a tough time with injuries and bad luck this weekend. So what does a good friend
do for him? Well, first you let him borrow your giant skis in case he needs them. Then, you
laugh as he falls down the stairs and take a VIDEO .

Full size
Paul and Allison chilling out the Friday we arrived. I love these love seats. They had a funny
way of leaning you back and thrusting you out of the seat while you were sitting there.

Full size
Chris was missing his wife Keri (she was working in Spokane) and so he made a surrogate from Duplo.
Yeah, it's missing that certain something, but somehow there's some Keri in there.

Full size
I don't know how to explain this other than to say that Bill was serenading Larry's dog Winston.

Full size
Paul, getting ready for his downhill race. We started the day with a hero's breakfast of Burger King
and the day just went uphill from there.

Team PJP's hardcore bike racer - June!

Full size
I think Paul looks like a pilot with his aviators and my ski helmet. He'd put Tom Cruise to shame.
"I was your teacher!"

Full size
Team PJP!

Full size
This is Carl Marshall in the hand-off area between the cross-country ski and the bike. Bill was
still on the course cursing the really heavy, junky snow. I'm impressed though that it went
as smoothly as it did considering that there was over 2,700 athletes in the event.

Full size
June is ready to rock!

Full size
So is First Sky Captain Paul Dehaan.

Kelli Caldwell also did the cross country ski portion for her team. Here she is explaining
how the race went - VIDEO .

Full size
Kelli was a super hero, not only for hauling a$$ on the ski course, but also for getting me back to
Bend in time to hop into the kayak and race the next leg. Thanks Kelli!

Full size
You can't quite see the pick in his mouth, but the event took its toll on all of us. Here is Bill
after competing well in Men's Pairs with Carl.

Full size
Everyone celebrates in their own way. Keri made it down from Spokane to celebrate our successful race
with us. Here, she and Allison demolish a tub of ice cream. That wooden spoon was bad news.

Full size
Chris likes to kiss the camera when he's having a good time.

Full size
The ladies taking pictures of themselves. I need to stop leaving my camera lying around.

Full size
The Pole Pedal Paddle crew minus me and Larry.

Full size
Some of us decided to enjoy being in Bend with a mountain bike ride out on Phil's Trail, a trail
system I've been meaning to get out to. Here, Keri shows off the bike round-about a few miles in.

Full size
Ross is an absolute horse on a bike. He keeps a mean pace for an old fart!

Full size
Chris Gorman saddled up for some riding too.

Full size
You can see a little of the terrain here with Ponderosa pines, juniper, and great sandy trails.
That's Paul D busting up the trail.

Full size
Here, Kelli shows off her practical nature, dropping a sweet farmer's blow. If you thought she
looked like a super hero before, check out this sweet helmet! And, Kelli, is that a kickstand I see?

Full size
The trail system is really well kept, providing decent uphills, good rocks, and fun downhills.
There's also artwork around the trail, like this guy riding rust.

Full size
Paul and Ross chilling with the Rust-Ride.

Full size
Our biking crew. Nice matching outfits on Kelli and Ross and sweet beachball from Chris! Thanks
for braving what looked to be junk weather to take me on Phil's trail folks!

Full size
Keri, debating about a descent.

Video of Keri not quite making it down the descent - HERE

Full size
She did wind up walkiing down this, only to go back and ride down it flawlessly (when I wasn't videoing).
Way to stay with it Keri!
