Matt and Nic, Rene, and Chad joined in for the epic Heritage Classic weekend
in Calgary, Feb 18-21, 2011. Our stories, photos, and videos are below.

Downhill skiing at Sunshine Village

Full size
Rene and I headed out to Sunshine Village for some sweet (but cold) skiing. Here is Rene
on his first run off Angel Express.

Full size
I may have pushed a little too hard initially as the steepness on this slope caused Rene to
lose his skis a few times. He did really well though, all things considered.

Rene, with a look at Goat's Eye Mountain and the Eagles.

Full size
I took Rene on a tour into some sidecountry skiing where he discovered that powder skiing is a little
different than skiing east coast powder (ice). Here he is getting up after a fall.

Full size
Look at the amazing skier!

Full size
A great shot of Rene looking to the Continental Divide. The day was absolutely gorgeous - just cold.

Full size
Rene and I skied down the far side of the Goat to get into some fresh snow.

Full size
Doesn't this guy look pro?

Full size
Here is a photo of Randall the gnome in front of Sunshine Village lodge.

Full size
Randall the gnome came to Banff hot springs too.

Rene and Randall at the Banff hot springs. You can't really see Rene's nostalgic suit here,
but he's wearing one. Best $1.90 I've ever spent!

Here, the sun in setting, providing a nice alpen glow on the mountains north of Canmore. Photo
taken from the Spray Lakes road.

Full size
Since it was the Heritage Classic, my amazing wife bought me a sweet toque and scarf to celebrate.
I figured since taking Randall to the game was like writing him off, I thought I'd capture the
spirit of the event with my sweet head gear.

Cross-country skiing

Full size
Randall came along for a cross-country ski tour of Shaganappi Point golf course in Calgary.

Full size
Rene also has an "interesting" pink toque.

Full size
Rene, and the city of Calgary, shortly after he took a pole to the solar plexus.

Full size
Here, Rene demonstrates the climbing technique of the herringbone. Nice view behind him as well looking
down to the Bow River. The day was mighty cold but there were still lots of people out. We also
saw the fly over of the Snowbirds for the Heritage alumni game since the golf course is right in line
of the stadium.

Full size
Randall also made the pilgrimage to visit the Saddledome, where the Calgary Flames play.

The Heritage Classic

Full size
We had a dad and his son take our photo on the train. I think we may have been a 2-4 deep at this point.
I'll introduce our hockey fans here as you see Rene the habs fan, me, and Matty having drinks on the
train.

Full size
Rene and Matt waiting for Chad by the train station.

Full size
This guy was in a frog suit with a Flames jersey that said 'Trumpet Guy' on the back. Seriously.

Full size
On the way into the game, we got foam helmets given to us. Matty, Chad, and Rene are taking it
all in. I like the Heritage Classic logo on the side of the stadium.

Full size
Chad and I and Rene saying something really intelligent.

Full size
This was the typical Habs fan to whom Rene felt an immediate bond...

Full size
I like this photo, especially with the loser guy who photo hijacked.

Full size
The view from our seats. This was the second most expensive section in the whole stadium.
When the play was in our zone, it was pretty awesome.

Full size
Matt and Chad getting comfortable. You can see the padded seat cushions (courtesy of Scotiabank)
that were put out for the fans. It's a darn good thing as the metal would have been cold.

A few videos from the start of the game

Another one from the start

Video of O Canada

Full size
Matty and I made a friend who needed a hot pocket in her feet. I made fun of Matt afterwards since
I think she was about 45 years old.

Full size
Matty and I went down for a beer run (and a pee run since Matty has a bladder the size of a gerbil)
and promptly missed two goals. Here we are taking a good photo though.

Full size
Here is one of my normal fun shots.

Full size
Matt wanted this photo for his son, Evan, who likes to take photos like this.

Full size
Matt and Chad at the game.

Full size
The flasks were filled with butterscotch ripple, apple pie liqueur (nice call Rene), and spiced
rum for our good buddy Kelly.

Full size
I've had a dream to get in a scrap with a mascot for years. I called out Harvie for about five
minutes ("Let's go HARVIE - duh duh duh duh duh!") and he finally came up to say hi.

Video of the end of the game

Full size
We could be an advertisment in this photo. We all wanted to get onto the ice, but there were so
many security guards (and there was a 15 foot drop and I kept thinking of my buddy Steve Ranta who
has now done 3 ankle surgeries to fix a drunken football game injury) that we decided to just
take photos.

Full size
A blurry photo of Rene and I.

Full size
Matty and I at the end of the game.

Full size
Chad and I at the end of the game.

Full size
This is the closest we could get to the ice surface. Stupid security and 15 foot drop offs.

Full size
Another photo of us at the game.

Skiing at Sunshine with Matty and Nic

Full size
Matty and Nic in the gondola on the way up to their first ski day in quite a while.

Full size
It turned out that the wind was quite cold and so we went in for a few warm-ups. Here are
Nati and Nic warming up by the fire at the day lodge.

Full size
We stopped in at the hot springs on the way home as well. Here are Nati and Nic, MUCH happier
in the heat.
