Two fun routes in the Bow Valley in Aug 2017

A quick run up Yam

Full size
I was pretty proud of myself making it from the car to the summit in just inside 90 minutes. This is the
view from the summit looking back at the scramble approach.

Full size
Looking back at the last bit up the mountain, and looking to the north to the Ghost.

Full size
Looking at Goat Mountain and the exit if you're going to do the tour.

Full size
A better look at Mt Fable.

Full size
Looking at the amphitheatre behind Yam.

Full size
Almost to the north - maybe make a panorama at some point.

Full size
Full north shot again.

Full size
The front of Yam, from the north west. A group of 60 something hikers were totally blazing a trail
and took off down the scree here. I hate scree so I hustled along the climber's trail until I got to
the uptrack and dropped down.

Full size
Some pretty fun-looking limestone actually. Some day I'll start climbing here.

Cascade Mountain

Full size
My day started off with burping Walter and changing a diaper at 4 so it was an alpine start in a
lot of ways. Check out the herd of elk joining us at the parking lot at Norquay though.

Full size
Mts Edith and Cory coming into the sun. I should have caught Louis, but missed it.

Full size
After actually catching the hard-right turn (and having Carl decimate the trail...), we quickly made time
up the ridge line.

Full size
These guys decided to join us. They were chasing a lady sheep actually, which was cool.

Close-up of the bigger one.

Carl and sheep.

Sheep on Cascade

Full size
The boys having a snack at a massive cairn just before first peak. A note that Carl and Dan didn't
make it back to this point on the way down since they 'totally went back the way they came...'

Full size
A smoky look up the head wall in front of Cascade Amphitheatre. Pretty cool looking striations in the rock.

Full size
Carl on the ridge after the First Peak, but before the False Summit.

Full size
Carl navigating the small step.

Down climbing the step on Cascade

Full size
Dano looking back at First Peak. It's pretty tough to see the trail here but it's in front of the cliff band
behind Dan. This is the reason for not wanting to do this route when it's wet though - lots of down-facing slab
on this portion.

Full size
The last bit of hanging snow on Cascade.

Full size
Dan at the summit of Cascade Mountain - 2988m.

Full size
Looking north.

Full size
Yours truly looking into the smoke. You can just see Rundle here.

Full size
A bit better here, but yeah, not much reward for the hike.

Full size
Carl made it too.

Full size
Dan moving swiftly down the summit trail. At 4.5 hours up and 4 hours down, I thought we actually
made decent time. Note the descent had a number of 15-20 min breaks, if only to wait for Carl and Dan
trying out a new route out.

Full size
A nice shot of me on the ridge with the smoke there.

A note here that my chest strap called out 5529 calories though.
