Some of the Rock Squad took a trip out to City of Rocks in April of 2006.

My pictures

We caravaned out to City of Rocks with Jason Stowers, Jordan Disko, and I in one car, Keri and Chris
Gorman and Luke Smith in the other car, and Ross was waiting for us at the park. When we arrived, it was so
cold and miserable that we elected to not have a campfire and to instead have a car dance party. This
is Keri in my car rocking out.

Full size
Jordan and Jason were chilling out in the front of the car. Jason woke up the next morning and couldn't
find his spoon or fork since he had fallen asleep with it under his toque.

Full size
Gorman took up a prominent position in the back of the car.

Full size
Stowers has a bad habit of getting all the way to our climbing destinations only to remember that
he left his camera somewhere at the trailhead. Here he is remembering (for the only time of the trip)
his camera AT THE CAR!

Full size
The first stop for our climbing trip was on the Flaming Rock. Jason, being the nice guy that he is,
volunteered to take the Gormans up their first multi-pitch. You can see them as specs on this climb
called Raindancer . I'm on top of a climb across the valley to take this shot.

Full size
This is Jordan coming up the first climb we did, a 5.10a called Mystery Bolter.

Full size
Jordan enjoyed the climb so much, he climbed above the bolts to get a better view. Don't worry Deb,
he was safe the whole time.

Full size
Here's a better shot of Jason and the Gormans on Raindancer .

Full size
Here I am working on my rope management skills. The tough part about the City is that all of the
climbs are too long for a single rope rappel (with a 60m rope), so I wound up belaying all of the
guys from this position. It's a good thing it wasn't a hot day. Hempy found a way around this
by buying a 70m rope, but I haven't had a chance to pick one up yet.

Full size
We even got the bouldering champion Luke up on Mystery Bolter . He came down quickly and vowed
that he still doesn't like to be on a rope.

Full size
Jason ran a double belay on Keri and Gorman up the second pitch.

Full size
Once we finished up on our climb, we went over to the other side of the Flaming Rock since Jason had dropped
the rope over to that side. Here is a cool window of the rock looking into the other side of the
valley with Ross and Jordan hanging out.

Full size
Jordan and I went down to the bottom of the Flaming Rock to try to lead a 5.10c climb called FILL IN .
I led it, but only through multiple takes, a bit of girlish screaming, and a meander around a tree to
avoid the roof moves. Jason then did the moves on TR to show us how to do it. Here he is just under the roof.

Full size
Here he is after having made the move.

Full size
We often tease each other about throwing a "gratuitous" heel hook, but there was nothing gratuitous
about this move.

Full size
The next day Jason and I worked on a 5.10a slab climb that almost made me cry. There were two other
pitches above this that got harder, but we decided that we didn't have the sack to work on it. There's
something to be said about friction slab granite that just makes you pee your pants.

Full size
Jason normally uses his nut tool to eat tuna with on climbing trips. The guys thought it would be
funny to bury some of his gear and make him dig for it with his nut tool.

Full size
Nice shot of Chris and Keri after a fun day of climbing at City of Rocks, ID.

Full size
I always love stopping in for dinner at the pub in Almo. Unfortunately, some Salt-Lake-City-ites
bought the place out and decided that they didn't live serving beer, so we had to bring our own.
As we were sitting outside, Keri pulled out her "lip stuff". Check out the label.

Full size
Back side of the label - "Tastiest lips north of the hips!".

Full size
Better view of the back of the label.

Full size
Nice shot of Keri on the horse.

Full size
Jason and I climbed on Elephant Rock the last day we were in the park. This is Jason leading Rye Crisp , a sweet 5.7 crack that topped out.

Full size
Jason's belay spot on the top of the climb.

Full size
Jason and I on top of Elephant Rock.

Full size
We finished with one of the coolest climbs on Elephant - but I don't remember what it's called.
Jason placed a well-needed cam just above this ledge. The crux is right where Jason is.

Full size
A shot showing the entire climb and Jason working through the middle section.

Full size
Jordan hopped on this one as well and this picture shows him making the tough traverse back across
to the bolt line after getting up on the arete.

Full size
Jordan getting up to the sweetest section of this climb, the fat ridge near the top.

Full size
Jordan hanging out on the ridge.

Full size
Me making that same traverse move. It's a little hairy, but a sweet move.

Full size
Driving back through Boise we found a restaurant called Pie Hole. I thought of my sister Renee.

Full size
Great shot of Jordan driving back to Portland.

Full size
Cool view into the Lagrande valley.

Jordan starting on Mystery Bolter . The start of this climb is a little burly.

Full size
Me climbing on that 5.10c that worked me.

Full size
Zoomed back out.

Full size
Showing all of Flaming Rock. I think I'm just clipping a bolt.

Same climb, more zoomed in.

Jordan working the crux of this climb.

Full size
Furry picture of Keri, Jason, and I hanging out.

Full size
Great shot of Parking Lot Rock.

Full size
Ross on the top of a climb on Parking Lot.

Full size
Cool shot near the Anteater Rock that Jordan took.

Full size
Jordan and Ross hanging out before Jordan led this pitch.

Full size
Keri claims she doesn't remember taking this shot, but I think it's funny.

Full size
Jordan leading Fill In .

Full size
Cool shot of J-rock.

Full size
Keri getting off the sketchy bottom section of this climb.

Full size
Every climber knows this feeling when you're hugging the rock and trying not to think about what's coming up next.

Keri, pulling big.

Chris, eating cookies.

All of us eating pioneer pudding at the Alma diner.

Full size
Cool sign in Alma.

Full size
It turns out that they now have a hot spring tub in Alma that is publicly available for $5. Totally worthwhile
and because the water is free-running and hot, you can show up greasy and leave clean! You can also rent
shorts and a towel for $1 each.
