Scott and Amy wanted to show Lucy her first backcountry hut trip, so he booked out
the Elk Lakes Hut in Kananaskis and we all went in for a hike.

Here's a bit of a blurry photo of Amy and Lucy getting ready for a short 9km hike into the hut. This
is shortly after Scott and Matthew both got speeding tickets coming into the parking lot.

Scott, Amy, Lucy, Ken, Mark, Tyrell, and Jeanna get ready to leave the parking lot. Again, I clearly
need a new camera.

Natalia and Jeanna put some weight on their backs for the hike in.

A whole bunch of different packs and different people going up the trail. I think Matthew commented
that we all looked like Skittles given our different colours.

At the border between BC and Alberta is a small kiosk announcing the entrance into BC Parks.
There was a small amount of snow on the ground at this point, slightly above 1800m. I found this
a little odd given the recent snow level being ~2400m, and since there wasn't any snow in the forecast.

About 2 and half hours from the car on really good trails brought us to the Elk Lakes Hut.
Here, I snapped a photo of Jeanna with her eyes closed and Natalia warming herself up by the fire.
It rained intermittently on our last leg to the hut, which then turned to snow during the night.

I love this story - so Scott likes the name Conrad (as in Conrad Kain) for a son. Since they didn't
have a son (and since Amy hates that name), they named Lucy's climbing doll Conrad.

I'm not exactly sure what prompted this photo but Amy was all over it.

This is what Tyrell considers his 'best side'.

Liz, Jeanna, and Natalia, along with Lucy, by the stove. Once that stove started to heat up, the
whole hut was warm. We definitely did NOT need the -12 deg C sleeping bags.

Really, this trip was all about eating and much less about hiking. After a great meal of spaghetti,
sauce, balls, salad, garlic toast, and great chocolate souffle, our breakfast was provided by Scott and
Amy in the form of crepes with strawberries/raspberries, whipped cream, and powdered sugar (along with
bacon - thanks Tyrell!). Here are Scott and Amy whipping up the fruit sauce.

Tyrell and Jeanna are sitting by the fire that Ken is trying to provide (since he hadn't sorted out
where the kindling box was, it took him a little longer than it should have).

There was a healthy amount of snow coming down over the course of the day. October 23, 2011
wound up being our first day of good snow, which is great since we hiked on July 1 this year in our
Chacos in snow.

Did I mention we had mimosas for breakfast?

Along with a party pig of brown ale from the good folks at Wild Rose Brewery.

Natalia and Jeanna enjoying the recent snow fall. It snowed on us almost all the way back to the car.
However, it was great since the snow was soft and not too wet.

A photo of Ken, looking across Lower Elk Lake.

Full size
I thought the view across Lower Elk Lakes was quite nice.

Full size
This rock looked pretty impressive to me as we wound our way back onto the Great Divide Trail.

Full size
I took a nice photo of Jeanna, along with a good-looking piece of rock behind her.

Full size
Thank you to Ken Lee for taking the time for a great composition here of my beautiful wife and I
with Upper Elk Lakes behind us. I think that's the Petain Glacier in behind us.

Full size
I tried to get a sense of the amount of snow falling on us, but of course, it never quite does it justice.

Full size
Natalia made a snowman at the trail junction, right at the border back into Alberta.

Jeanna Berg, with a whole lot of snow behind her.

Natalia's snowman. Ken added mittens too.

Here is Natalia adding the finishing touches.

for organizing such a great weekend tour.
