The boys and I got together again this year for a fun weekend at Benny's cabin at Emma
Lake in northern Saskatchewan. Thanks to our wives for being understanding and encouraging
us to maintain old friendships, along with giving us the weekend off to socialize, fish, and hang out.

First, a photo of Henry's huge smile as he comes off the school bus for the first time. What a happy boy!

Full size
We got a bunch of veggies from Natalia's friend Kristen and I didn't fully wash the broccoli. When we found a few
caterpillars, Henry was pretty excited to have a peak under the magnifying glass and the microscope.

My Mom made me homemade apple pie for the visit to Saskatoon.

Full size
And steak for dinner. Not a bad dinner at all I'd say! Thanks Mom!

Full size
My friend Lane got to try a piece of pie as well. Yummy Apple Pie!

Erik decided to take the weekend to try out his new tent with 'DARK ROOM TECHNOLOGY!'. His last tent
had a funny habit of flying away when it got windy so it was Erik's hope that this one would be better.
This was the confused portion of the tent assembly process.

Full size
Then Earl got involved, pretended he was a helicopter, and it went along much quicker.

Full size
This is Benny's technique for starting a fire.

Full size
Benny's cabin is in a great spot where it sees a lot of wildlife activity. Here's one of many deer who
stopped to visit us over the weekend.

Generally, the highlights of our weekends are the food, and this trip was no different. Here, Kristine had premade us
stuffed chicken breasts with potatoes, veggies, and garlic 'briquettes' as we teased Benny that he burned.

Full size
One of the trees in Benny's yard had blown over last year leaving a giant stump. With huge amounts of effort, Benny
and his boys got the stump out of the ground, but it was still a huge stump. We decided to help Benny clean up his
cabin and burn that puppy down. This was tossing the stump in the fire.

Full size
The fire pit is large so it gives an idea of the size of the stump.

Full size
Benny took me for a kayak ride around Cattle Island and we had stunning weather for it. Here's Benny on
his kayak near the dock.

Full size
Near a really quite area by the island.

Full size
I told Benny that the serenity and quiet here is very similar to backcountry skiing. No one around for miles and just a
nice quiet place to enjoy nature.

Full size
Thankfully I got my fishing license for the weekend as I caught a couple of jack fish. Earl got the big
fish of the weekend, but we kept four of them for a fish fry.

Full size
One of mine. Not huge, but cool to catch something on a gorgeous fall afternoon.

Full size
Earl with another fish he caught.

Full size
Earl used his surgeon's skills to carve this bad boy up.

Full size
I'd say Benny's technique was far better and left no bones in the fillets at all.

Full size
This is apparently the move you use to get rid of fish guts - put them in a cardboard box and toss them on the fire.
Thanks Erik for your 'outdoor specialists' techniques.

Full size
Yummy jack fish fried as appies.

Full size
For dinner, we had steak, twice-baked potatoes (thanks Gracie!), and ribs. Note we also even had salad!

Full size
Breakfast was sausage AND bacon, eggs, and leftover baked blueberry French toast.

Full size
Erik convinced me to do another round on the kayak. He was positive he was going to dump himself into the
lake since he wasn't super balanced, but he got better.

Closer to 50% confidence.

Another beautiful day on the water.

Chilling by the fire being a cool guy.

Full size
Here I am very pleased that we have a huge fire to hang out by.
