Photos of camping at Sandy McNab and Andrew and I's summit of Holy Cross Mountain.

First here is Walter with our backyard bounty - fresh big carrots, beets, and yellow beans!

Walter is SOO excitd about the singing pumpkin that he brought it into bed with him.

Camping at Sandy McNab

Full size
We decided to finish our camping season at Sandy McNab in the Sheep River Valley. Here
is our first night meal - noodles, meatballs, and salad.

Full size
The campground has quite a lot of paved road/pathways in the area meaning that the boys could bike
around to their heart's content.

Our friends Lindsey and Taylor joined us with their kids and here is Lindsey getting ready for
a family bike ride with their dog.

Full size
We biked down to the Sheep River at the bottom of the day use area. Here's Walter working on
a cast into the river.

Full size
And here's Henry chilling out at the river.

Henry and Walter found these inukshuks/cairns and they decided to explore.

Here's Henry building a cairn.

Full size
And Walter built one too.

Full size
I was proud of the boys for biking back to the campground as it's quite a steep hill
from the day use area back up.

Full size
The boys thought they won the lottery when they got to have their own can of 7-up!

Full size
We went for a drive to Sheep River Falls and the boys thought it was pretty cool.

Walter smiling because his mouth is full of Oreo cookies.

Full size
Charlotte playing at the playground. One of the downsides of most of the campgrounds we frequent
is relatively few of them have playgrounds. This one does!

Full size
After a pretty chilly night, we decided to go for a walk around Foran Grade and Windy Ridge.
Here's Henry looking into the Sheep River valley.

Full size
While much of the foothills is grazed land, it's still always a bit surprising to run into cattle
on a hiking trail.

Full size
And have them everywhere.

Hiking Holy Cross Mountain with Andrew - Sept 2021

Full size
My friend Andrew and I try to get one good hike a year and hopefully one good ski tour too. This year
we targeted Holy Cross Mountain since it skunked me earlier in the spring. While it was a brisk start to the
morning, Andrew was spry and up for it.

Full size
As the sun slowly started to dawn on us, the light changed and started to pick up colour.

Full size
After traipsing through the forest we actually made it this time to the bottom of the basin that would
eventually lead us to the top of Holy Cross Mountain. To my left here is the cliff band that Dan and I
got stuck on in the blizzard earlier this year.

Full size
A very light amount of snow had come down overnight, but the bluebird sky made it a pretty sweet outing.

Full size
Looking up the scree field says 'pitter patter, let's get at 'er'. To the right side is the regular
scramble route, but with really high winds, we decided to do the grunt route instead.

Full size
Andrew on some loose scree as we climb our way to the summit.

Full size
The ridgeline is coming closer and closer, but it was definitely a slog.

Full size
This gives a better sense of the slope angle here.

Full size
Out on the ridge, heading to the summit.

Full size
Andrew says that there aren't a lot of places better than our backyard.

Full size
We took a slightly different descent route below the headwall and it was a bit on the slick side.

Full size
It finally warmed up enough to take gloves and layers off as the snow melts off here.

Full size
A gorgeous meadow at the bottom of Holy Cross and on the exit route. A comment for those looking to
do this route as I'm still not sure there's a 'path' or 'route' through the lower forest other than
follow your compass and suck it up. Thanks Andrew!

Garmin data HERE but highlights were inside 7 hours car to car, 16 km and 1400m ascent.

Full size
A view of our route including the screwing around in the forest on the way up and on the way down.

Full size
There was definitely a bit of snow in the mountains in the morning.

Neat look at the ridge line up to Mt Head.

Full size
One of the cooler photos of me in the mountains. I may have to print this now.

Full size
The long trudge through the forest trying to figure out where to go.

Full size
This meadow is a cool spot as you transition from full forest back into light forest hiking. I think I'm looking for a bear.
