Some fun photos of Henry at Easter, along with skiing Surprise Pass with Maria in
April 2015

Easter

Full size
Since I had to be in Boston early on Easter Monday, we decided to stay closer to home. Natalia put on
a big brunch spread and we invited some friends. Check out the food spread!

Here's Henry with his Easter Kinder egg from Jen.

I think this photo is my favourite.

Here you see Henry looking up at his mom.

Henry is using Luc's old pull-along toy and quite likes it.

Surprise Pass with Maria

Full size
Maria has started ski-touring this year and asked if I would take her out somewhere before the end of the
season. I love skiing Surprise Pass, so I elected to try her on that tour. Here is Maria in the Lake Louise
parking lot a bit after 7am.

Full size
You can see Saddle Mountain to Maria's left here.

Full size
When we were in the parking lot, we ran into a gentleman planning to go ski tour by himself up Fairview.
It turns out he got a little lost and wound up joining our efforts on Surprise Pass. Here are Bill and
Maria making their way up to Saddleback.

Full size
A bit better look at the Saddleback col in between Saddle Mountain and Fairview Mountain.

Full size
Check out this weird bit of larch debris on a larch tree. I thought initially it was a fungus or moss
but it turns out that it's actually growing out of the larch buds.

Maria crossing one of the large slide paths.

Full size
A look back at Sheol mountain. I still think that rock triangle is really rad. Check out the blue
water icefall as well. You can see a bit of Temple just in behind Sheol too.

Full size
The second big slide path that Maria is crossing. The conditions were stable enough on this day that
that this south-facing bowl would have probably skied just fine.

Full size
There's a section on the ski up the Sheol valley where you have to descend a little down to the moraine.
Maria found the heavy snow to be a bit challenging and wound up taking a head plant. Notice she's still
smiling though.

Full size
I think this is Haddo Peak behind Maria as she's making her way to the start of the couloir.

Full size
Here's Bill with the Haddo glacier behind him.

Full size
Here's Maria on the skin track I put into the couloir. There was enough snow that a boot pack wasn't
necessary.

Here are Maria and Bill successfully at the top of Surprise Pass. Bill had cut us out a nice place to
sit down and enjoy our lunch.

Here's Bill from Invermere at the top of Surprise Pass.

Video of Bill descending

Full size
Since Maria found the entrance to the pass a bit steep, we elected to boot pack down the steepest bits of the descent.

Video of Maria just before putting her skis back on

Full size
Here's Maria putting a few turns into the ~700m descent down to the creek bottom.

A look back up at Surprise Pass from the bottom of the run.

Full size
Maria was REALLY happy to be down the run, although she quite enjoyed it.

After we skied across Lake Louise, here's Maria in front of the chateau, with Fairview mountain behind her,
and her new skis in front of her. Welcome to backcountry skiing Maria. It's a healthy addiction.
