Skiing Surprise Pass with Andrew in December 2020.

I managed to convince my friend Andrew to come for a ski up Surprise Pass. Here's the beautiful light
looking at Fairview Mountain over the closed bathroom - good thing I had already had my morning constitutional!

After leaving the parking lot, it's a short jaunt through the very well-signed trail to
climb up to a nice view looking back at the Chateau. Here's Andrew of Foothills Nordic fame.

It was such a beautiful warm day that it was hard not to just sit here in the sun at the Saddleback
Pass little plateau.

I think this bowl might actually have been the best skiing in the area on this particular day.
We could see just a few tracks up here and it still looked fluffy. This is about 2/3 of the way to
the back of the Sheol Valley.

Full size
Early season conditions persist here for sure as this crossing was pretty wind-hammered
and 'challenging' terrain. We kept our skins on and I still think that was likely the best option.

Looking back down the valley and out to the Bow River. We actually still had cell reception the
entire tour, so clearly there's a new tower up in this area.

After determining that we were on the wrong slope, this is me turning tail and continuing up valley.

After prematurely boot-packing a section that was not the correct one, here's Andrew shuffling back
over to the correct couloir.

Although conditions on this day left something to be desired, it's always a gorgeous tour up to
Surprise Pass.

Full size
A 'bit bony' I'd say on this day.

This was where the snow transitioned from 'wind-hammered terrible', to 'slightly less terrible'.
