Natalia decided she didn't like our perfect grass backyard and it needed to change.
This is the story of that change.

Our backyard project

The before pictures. Note the snow still on the ground when we started.

Staked out for removal - step 1.

Removal of sod ranks among some of the worst manual labour jobs to do. Removal of sod, put it in
wheelbarrow, cart it up the ~5 m slope from the backyard to the front yard, dump it on the tarp.

Full size
More and more sod. Note the heavy clay in the sod.

Full size
Removal of the first strip. It takes WAY more work than you want it to.

The pile of sod grew. It was about this point that I decided to post sod for free so that I wouldn't
have to lug as much to the compost.

Meanwhile, my wonderful mother was taking good care of Henry and Walter so that we could work.
Of course, she spoiled them rotten, but that's her privilege.

Happy Walter with a dipped cone!

A bunch of the sod removed. We borrowed the rototiller from Natalia's friend Kristen and did some serious
chewing of the soil/clay mix we have here. I even broke a shear pin, so that's something.

Other side of the yard, post sod-removal.

Full size
Yes, we still had snow on our front lawn along with a pile of sod under tarps (since it was raining), and then
3 yards of rock ready for the next stage of the project. I'm sure our neighbours had questions.

Full size
Walter completed his sport ball this week as well and got a ribbon! He LOVED sportball and crushed
pretty much any ball they threw at him.

Full size
Henry came downstairs with these butterfly wings on, and of course, Walter has to do what Henry does.

Full size
Walter decided he wanted a cowboy hat on to go to the park.

Full size
A sense of the amount of sod and clay/soil removed.

Full size
This is after Natalia did all of the edger stones, and we removed and cut in a spot for the pathway
and planted all of the trees and shrubs (6 to go yet), but without the fountain installed.

Full size
The other half of the yard. After 6 12 hour days, my body was done. That's too many loads of wheelbarrows
pushed up the slope and too much sod ripped out of the ground. The upside is that Natalia laboured right along
side me so I know we won't be doing this again soon.
